Tried that, but initially got problems due to folder not being delete- able or renameable (in use and default calendar). But eventually worked it out - created new blank calendar, copied calendar entries over, changed users default calendar to non-default (i.e. one just created), restarted server (to bump of those sharing old calendar), deleted old calendar, created new one as calendar type and copied entries back, changed default calendar back to default, deleted temporary calendar... phew! Worked out during this process what the problem was. At some point in the past the users 'account.info' file had been deleted (trying to fix unrelated problem). When CGP recreates this file, it seems to make all folders simple ones i.e. doesn't restore the class to what it was before file was deleted. Is this a bug? Anyhow, I'm sure that all this could have been done more easily. I'm afraid I don't really have a handle on CLI, so not an option for me. But thanks a lot for the suggestions - did the job as it got me thinking about how to do in right way. Much appreciated.
