Subject: best practices: migrating domains

i have a client who needs to migrate from one domain to another, and i
want to be sure to make the switch in the least disruptive way.

they're running cgp 4.2.10 on os x 10.3.9.

they have three (3) domains configured, with the majority of user
accounts in the secondary domain.

the primary domain is and has been active, but they haven't used it as
such for awhile.

the third domain isn't used and will go away soon.

i'll refer to the domains as:

primary: mail.company.com
secondary: mail.companylongname.com

they want to continue receiving mail addressed to
mail.companylongname.com but use mail.company.com for all
correspondence.

on a whim, i tried creating an account under the secondary, tarring
the account data, deleting the account, and moving to the primary
domain and restarting mail services, but that didn't work.

do i need to re-enter license keys in this situation?

what's the best way to accomplish this task, and how much downtime
would you estimate?

thanks for your help.
